About Us

As college students, we began cooking as a way to spend time together.  Our love for cooking and learning about food brought us closer together and more connected with the food we made.  We both became vegetarian during college after learning about the environmental impacts of the American food system.  This past year, we challenged ourselves to go one step further and purchase the majority of our produce from local farmers.  In order to have more control over our food and save money, we began making as much of our food from scratch as possible, including breads, pasta, yogurt, granola, and sauces (all of which will appear on our blog).

Our philosophy about food stems from our cooking methods.  We are lucky to live in the Charlottesville, Virginia food-shed which produces a wide variety of fruits and vegetables most of the year.  We attempt to take advantage of the natural flavors and subtleties of this produce and highlight it in our cooking.  While we gain much information from cookbooks, cooking shows, and food blogs, we try not to focus on individual recipes but instead on the ingredients.  Thus, many of the recipes we publish are experiments and impromptu combinations of the food available that day.

We believe that cooking is not about the recipe.  It's about the ingredients, the inspiration, and the connections made between people.  We see cooking as a way to bring people together and reunite them with the natural world around us.  We hope that you will gain some inspiration and knowledge from our posts and we hope that we gain some from you as well.  We look forward to hearing from you and welcome any comments via the the blog comments section or through email at itsnotabouttherecipe@gmail.com.  And remember, it's not about the recipe...
